How To Factory Reset Intel Compute Stick

Intel Compute Stick

I have had a few people ask me how to reset the Intel Compute Stick with Windows 8.1 so I am going to post the steps below. Please make sure that before you attempt a refresh, reset, or restore that you backup all of your personal files to an offline device like a USB pen drive external hard drive or a micro sd card.

There is a Windows recovery partition on the Intel Compute Stick. You can use this to Refresh, Reset, or Restore Windows. Here is what each of these actions do:

REFRESH
If your PC isn’t performing as well as it once did, and you don’t know why, you can refresh
your PC without deleting any of your personal files or changing your settings. This is what
happens with Refresh:

  1. Files and personalization settings won’t change.
  2. PC settings will be changed back to their defaults.
  3. Apps from the Windows Store will be kept.
  4. Apps installed from disks or websites will be removed.
  5. List of removed apps will be saved on the desktop.

RESET
If you want to recycle your PC, give it away, or start over with it, you can reset it completely. This process removes everything and reinstalls Windows. This is what happens with a reset:

  1. All personal files and apps will be remove.
  2. PC settings will be changed back to their defaults.

RESTORE
If you think an app or driver that you recently installed caused problems with your PC, you can restore Windows back to an earlier point in time, called a restore point. System Restore doesn’t change your personal files, but it might remove recently installed apps and drivers.

Search-Recovery

First we need to determine the state of your Intel Compute Stick. Does it boot to Windows? if so, you will want to go to the Windows Start and type in Recovery under settings and select Recovery Options. You can visit this site to view detailed recovery options or follow the video posted below: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc

If Windows failed to boot, you should see the recovery process start automatically, but if it does not start automatically we can manually force it. Press F8 during the boot when you see the prompt that says “F8 to Activate Windows 8.1 Recovery Mode”

All of this information can be found in the Intel Compute Stick User Manual which you can download directly from Intel. Here is the link: http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/stck1a32wfc/sb/stck1a32wfc_eng_userguide01.pdf
